Excerpt:

People screamed all around him in panic and fear. Acrid smoke tainted the air, bringing tears to his eyes. He tried to stand and realized he was belted into a seat. His fingers clawed at the restraint, frenziedly seeking release.

The unexpected touch of a human hand on his nearly made Al jump out of his skin. His head snapped to the right, toward the face of the pale, dark-haired girl seated beside him. She smiled bleakly, her eyes dark smudge in the poor lightning.

Her fingers burrowed between his and she squeezed his hand hard enough to hurt.

"What a way to go, huh, Gordon?" she asked, her voice tight with tears.

Al's eyes tracked past her to the window on her right. They were in an airplane and it was going down fast. If the trees rising rapidly from below were any indication, they were in for something markedly less than a soft, three point landing.

He clenched his fingers hard around hers and shut his eyes tightly against the impending crash.

"Oh, boy."
