One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight.

"Albert M. Calavicci," the lieutenant whispered to himself. "Lieutenant. United States Navy. Serial Number B 212329."

Rain pounded the walls as he paced the small basement cell and sucked on his cigar, no longer hearing the music that came from the radio on his bed stand.

One. Two. Three. Four.

Without warning, a bamboo pole slammed against human flesh and the sound reverberated through the walls of the hospital, down to the basement. Lieutenant Calavicci stood still, braced, waiting for the screams.

Then he realized it was thunder he'd heard.

He shut his eyes and forced his breath out.

Don't think about it. Don't think about it.

Five. Six. Seven. Eight.

Turn.

He continued the pace.

Think about something else.

Think about being home.

You're home, you lucky bastard, remember? Home sweet home.

New job waiting. Navy ought to owe you a hell of a lot of back pay for all those years, huh? Play your cards right, you probably won't have to worry about money for the rest of your life.

One. Two. Three.

Wonder if they'll ever let me fly again?

Another bamboo slap of thunder intruded and Lieutenant Calavicci tried to steady his breath.

"Albert M. Calavicci," he recited, a little louder. "Lieutenant. United States Navy. Serial Number B 212329."
