Excerpt:

"Bob, you're doing it again." A woman's voice, filled with infinite scorn. Or, possibly worse, compassion. He was trying too hard to catch his balance to be sure, and the voice was softened with an unfamiliar drawl. Things were still blurry, but there was an impression of bright lights in darkness, the smell of - popcorn?, the feel of a woman's arm under his hand, and -

His vision sharpened, focused on the woman and then, shockingly, on the sandy-haired man behind her, aiming the rifle at - him? - her?

He yanked the woman toward him and down, twisting himself over her, knowing that there was no way mortal flesh could beat a bullet but knowing he had to try, ignoring her shriek. His back hit something that wobbled, creaked, and he tucked her head into the curve of his arm and squeezed his eyes tight, waiting for the shot.

The woman didn't appreciate the rescue. She was yelling at him, beating at him with her free hand.

The barrier creaked again and collapsed on his head, hard but not, fortunately, too heavy.

There was no shot.

He opened one eye to see a two-dimensional yellow duck dangling from a pulley, and a well-manicured fist descending with purpose toward his face. He ducked, and heard a ladylike oath.

He began to suspect that all was not as it appeared.

"Oh boy," he muttered resignedly. It was going to be one of these Leaps.
